The Powell River Hospital Foundation exists to strengthen patient care in our community.
Our mission is to further the improvement of patient care at qathet General Hospital, as well as Evergreen Extended Care, Willingdon Village, and other health care facilities in the qathet region, through the support for equipment, education, and research. Your support directly advances this mission and helps ensure high-quality care close to home. Members of the Foundation include business people, professionals retirees, and community minded individuals, all concerned with the quality of health and life in our community. We are a non-profit society founded in 1994, and believe transparency and accountability are essential to our success. In Memoriam
Tony and Margaret Dawkins
The Powell River Hospital Foundation exists to strengthen patient & resident care within qathet General Hospital, and in our community. When deciding to donate to the Foundation, or any endeavour, the cause should be close to your heart. There are many reasons to give; to meet an equipment need, to expand a service (i.e., CT Scan program in 2010, which brought me to Powell River!), or to give thanks to the organization and people who helped someone you love, or loved.
The last is why my family donated to the PR Hospital Foundation in honour of our parents, Margaret & Tony Dawkins. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary just 4 weeks prior to mum’s passing. A bequeath from our parents’ estate provided the funds to build an all-weather garden gazebo, an extension off the Family Room within ECU, that will allow future residents and their families a private outdoor gathering space as they say good-bye.
The care and attention given to our mother, Margaret, by all those working in ECU, provided us with an additional year we never thought to have.
The Family Room became a haven of calm for our family, as our mother began her MAiD journey.
As our father, Tony, began his own MAiD journey, 14 months later, we utilized the Joseph Agius Hospice Suite at qathet General Hospital on MSP, to gather our family to remember, to reflect, to love, to laugh, to cry, and to accept what was to come. Having these two rooms available within our local hospital is a gift to families as they prepare to release their loved ones on their final journey.
As you think about those people you love and care for, that were helped by our local hospital, remember, the Powell River Hospital Foundation is the link between what we want and what we need to assist the hospital community help our friends and families, when we are no longer able to do so ourselves.
Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day.

Shirley Koleszar Oct 18, 1929 - Dec 9, 2025
Shirley Koleszar was a vibrant and enthusiastic member of our community who generously gave her time to many volunteer activities. Shirley lived her life with energy, compassion, kindness, and grace.
The Powell River Hospital Foundation was one of the organizations closest to her heart. She gave many hours supporting the Foundation’s projects and was an integral and valued member of the board. Shirley was instrumental in helping our community receive its first CT Scan in 2009, a milestone that greatly improved access to care for local residents. More recently, as part of a Telus initiative, Shirley coordinated a group of knitters who created breast prostheses for breast cancer patients, affectionately called “Knitted Knockers.” In recognition of this effort, she and the group were featured on Knowledge Network in 2012 as one of its inspirational community partners.
Shirley spent her later years living in Kiwanis Village and Evergreen Extended Care, facilities supported by the Hospital Foundation she cared so deeply about. Shirley’s generosity, spirit, and commitment to Community will be remembered with gratitude. Her legacy lives on in the health services she helped strengthen and in the many lives she touched.
